The Brittan Vineyard lies just 12 miles southwest of McMinnville, tucked into the foothills of the Coastal Range. The original 18 acres were planted in 2001, but due to the challenging nature of this site and limited topsoil, only eight acres survived. Since 2004 when Robert and Ellen Brittan purchased the vineyard, it has been an ongoing rehabilitation project: replanting, retraining and learning the unique landscape that has become the Brittan Vineyard. This includes removing the Pinot Meunier plantings and replacing them with Syrah in 2005. An additional half acre was added in 2013, so there is now 1.5 acres planted to Syrah.
2015 started out moderate, then showed some heat in mid-summer, followed by a relatively cooler fall. This allowed for good fruit maturity without high alcohol, resulting in wines that are elegant and nuanced. They are sure to gratify the palate now, as well as in the years to come.
On the nose the 2015 Estate Syrah exhibits a complementary blend of fruits, spice and savory notes with aromas of white pepper, ocean brine, plum and truffle. This is confirmed on the palate with flavors of passion fruit, blueberry and juniper berry, all supported by a pleasant mix of cedar, allspice and caraway. A perfect balance of acid and tannin provide the structure for this age-worthy wine.
